Barack Obama and Hamid Karzai pledge unity on Taliban
[16/08/2010 12:15 pm]
US President Barack Obama and his Afghan counterpart Hamid Karzai have held an hour-long video conference talk in which they vowed to continue working together to combat the Taliban. Air Max II Mr Obama also repeated US commitment to working with Afghans on stability and security, the White House said. June was the deadliest month for US forces in Afghanistan since the conflict began in 2001. Analysts say mounting casualties have eroded support for the war in the West. Air Max 93 In a statement, the White House said: "Both leaders agreed to continue in our shared efforts to combat violent extremism, protect the Afghan people, improve governance, and deliver basic services, particularly at the local level." Mr Obama also repeated the US commitment to partnering the Afghan people in trying to ensure that Afghanistan will be stable and secure. The US envoy to Kabul, Karl Eikenberry, and top military commander General David Petraeus also participated in the video conference, the White House said. Air Max Light Correspondents say relations between Mr Obama and Mr Karzai have rarely been easy - particularly after Mr Karzai was re-elected last year in an election widely condemned as corrupt by Western observers. Washington gave Mr Karzai the red-carpet treatment during a state visit earlier this year in a bid to smooth relations. But Mr Karzai has continued to be frank in his criticism of Western powers. Last month, he said the West was not doing enough to combat the Pakistani Taliban. Air Max 95 And he also said that leaked information from the US whistle-blowing website Wikileaks had endangered the lives of Afghans working with American forces.    India threatens to suspend BlackBerry by 31 August
[13/08/2010 11:28 am]
India has given the maker of BlackBerry phones a deadline of 31 August to provide the government access to all of its services or face being shut down. Air Max 2009 III The country fears the device could be used by militants and insurgents in a repeat of the 2008 attack on Mumbai that left 166 people dead. The row is the latest in a long running dispute between Research in Motion (RIM) and international governments. RIM declined to comment on the deadline. The central issue is how governments monitor the encrypted traffic from BlackBerry devices. Air Max TN10 The United Arab Emirates (UAE) was the first country to propose a block on the devices, saying they posed a "national security risk" in their ability to send messages and e-mail without the authorities having the ability to monitor the communications. RIM sends this data to servers in Canada and the encryption used to secure this is virtually uncrackable. Other countries followed the UAE's lead, including Lebanon, Algeria, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait. Air Max 2009 Leather India is the latest country to enter the fray, with analysts expecting more to follow suit. Imminent threat In 2008, the BBC reported that RIM was at loggerheads with the Indian government over demands that it help decrypt suspicious text messages. RIM's answer then, as now, was that it does not allow any third party - or even the company itself - to read information sent over its network. In July this year, RIM responded to a report in India's Economic Times that said the firm would allow Indian security authorities to monitor Blackberry services. Air Max Turbulence The firm said it co-operated with all governments "with a consistent standard and the same degree of respect", but denied it had ever provided anything unique to the government of one country that it had not offered to the governments of all countries. Government officials said that if no solution between themselves and RIM was found, then they would ask mobile phone operators to block BlackBerry's messaging and e-mail until RIM provides access to data transmitted over the handset. Air Max 2009 III A Home Ministry spokesperson confirmed that it had now issued a deadline to RIM to comply with its demands. This differs from Saudi Arabia's demands, who only wanted access to the handsets messaging system. There are more than one million BlackBerry users in India, with the continent slated to be a significant market for smart phone manufactures as the country expands its network coverage. Air Maxim 1 The government say RIM had proposed helping authorities track e-mails without sharing encryption details but, say officials, that does not go far enough.    Israel releases Turkish ship from Gaza aid flotilla
[06/08/2010 11:12 am]
Israel has released an impounded Turkish aid ship on which nine activists were killed as they tried to break the Gaza blockade two months ago. Air Max 360 The Mavi Marmara was towed out of Haifa by a Turkish tugboat following a request from Ankara. Two other Turkish ships are set to leave within hours. Israel's deadly raid on the aid convoy in May strained relations with Turkey and caused an international outcry. Israel this week agreed to co-operate with a UN investigation into the clash. Womens Air Max 2009 The three Turkish towing ships will "receive three vessels anchored in Israel along with the personal equipment that was aboard them," Israel's defence ministry said in a statement. It is believed that three remaining non-Turkish boats are still being held in Israel, along with the Irish cargo ship, Rachel Corrie, which sailed towards Gaza some days later. Deadly clash The Mavi Marmara was the largest of the six-ship flotilla intercepted by Israeli troops on 31 May. Air Max 90 The flotilla, crewed by activists from a coalition of pro-Palestinian groups, was trying to reach Gaza with 10,000 tonnes of humanitarian aid. Israel and Egypt have blockaded the Palestinian territory since the Hamas militant group took control of it in 2007. The Israelis, who recently loosened the blockade, say it is intended to stop militants in Gaza from obtaining rockets to fire at Israel. Womens Air Max 90 The Israeli military has said its commandos resorted to force only after being attacked by activists after they rappelled from helicopters onto the deck of the Mavi Marmara. But the activists say the commandos opened fire as soon as they boarded the vessel, which was in international waters at the time. Earlier this week, the United Nations announced that it was opening an inquiry into the flotilla raid which would include both Israeli and Turkish participation. Air Max 90-360 Following months of negotiations, Israel agreed on Monday to co-operate with the inquiry.    Virgin Media complains to Ofcom about Project Canvas
[04/08/2010 11:12 am]
Virgin Media has lodged a complaint with Ofcom, aimed at halting the BBC-backed video-on-demand service Project Canvas. Air Max 90 Leather The cable giant says the project, which is developing common standards for net TV in the UK, is anti-competitive. BT, Channel 4 and ITV are also partners. It was given the green light in May, when the Office of Fair Trading ruled it was not a merger. But Virgin Media said it could destroy the online TV market. Air Max ST National health specs It said the collaboration between the three most prominent public service broadcasters would "significantly and irreparably harm" the TV sector. Describing it as the "national health glasses" of the TV world, Virgin said it would stifle innovation. "The Canvas partners have significantly exceeded their original claims to be creating a common set of open standards which could have been improved upon by others and are now intent on controlling every aspect of how people watch TV," the firm said in a statement. Air Max 90 Mesh "The BBC Trust has already acknowledged, but then completely ignored, the impact that Canvas will have on so many different organisations; from consumer electronics firms to software developers and enterprising new technology manufacturers to independent programme makers. The BBC Trust, which is the corporation's governing body, gave permission for it to take part in Project Canvas in June 2010. Project Canvas has been described as an attempt to converge broadcast with broadband, while the BBC's director general Mark Thompson said it was the "holy grail" for future public service broadcasting. Air Max Terra Ninety Movie streaming site Blinkbox said it could not understand the complaint. "I find it hard to see how a not-for-profit organisation creating a standardised non-subscriber platform that not only lowers prices for consumers but speeds up the growth of internet enabled TVs could be seen as having a stifling effect on consumer innovation or consumer choice," said chief executive Michael Comish. Air Max 90 Premium "This complaint by Virgin to Ofcom is another transparent ploy by the company to hold the process up because it knows that when Canvas launches Virgin will lose its only point of difference in this constantly evolving market," he added. The BBC said it was happy to discuss the grounds of the complaint with Ofcom but remained buoyant about the future of Canvas. "Our proposals remain unchanged and will create an open standards-based internet connected TV environment within which competition and innovation can flourish," the corporation said in a statement. Air Max 93 "We remain focused on launching a consumer proposition next year that will transform people's daily TV viewing experience," it added. Sky has also been critical of the venture but has not yet lodged a complaint. Air Max 95 Air max 97 Air Max BW Air Max Kids 180 Air Max LTD
